What to see and do in Esterri d'Àneu

Esterri d'Àneu
Village
Esterri d'Àneu is the chief town of the Vall d'Àneu, in the Pallars Sobirà district (Lleida), next to the source of the Noguera Pallaresa. It has 917 inhabitants and lives from agriculture, livestock farming, a hydroelectric power station and tourism. It is reached via the C-13 road, which links to Sort and Lleida, and the C-28, towards Vielha. It preserves the parish church of San Vicente, the Calle Mayor with its boundary cross, a medieval bridge over the river and the Casa Gasia; the Ecomuseum of the Aneu Valleys records the traditional life of the area. It holds the Pascueta fair on Easter Monday, its main festival on the second Sunday of August, and a livestock fair on 15 October.
Church of Esterri d'Àneu
Monument
The church of Sant Vicenç d'Esterri d'Àneu is the parish temple of the town of Esterri d'Àneu, in the comarca of Pallars Sobirà, situated on the bank of the Noguera Pallaresa. It stands in the centre of the town, at the south-eastern end of what was once the walled town, and was built between the 16th and 17th centuries to replace the old church of Sant Vicenç, of which only the ruins known as Sant Vicenç vell remain today. Dedicated to Sant Vicenç Màrtir, it is also the head of a large grouping of parishes in the Pallars Sobirà, including those of Alós d'Isil, Àrreu, Escaló and Espot.
Esterri d'Àneu Main Festival
Activity
The festa major of Esterri d'Àneu, in Pallars Sobirà (Lleida), is celebrated on the second Sunday of August. Among its traditions, the village preserves three dances of its own, danced during these days, which mark the high point of the local festive calendar.
Ordinances of the Valls d'Àneu
Historical milestone
The Còdex d'Ordinacions de les Valls d'Àneu brings together the legal provisions drawn up between 1337 and 1424 in the Vall d'Àneu, in the Catalan Pyrenees, and is the first European legal text devoted to the persecution of witchcraft. The 1424 ordinances, promulgated by count Arnau Roger IV of Pallars Sobirà and drawn up at the castle of València d'Àneu, comprise fifteen chapters that define the crimes of witchcraft —such as worshipping the Boc de Biterna or making poisons— and their penalties, almost always burning at the stake. They thus anticipate later texts such as the bull Summis desiderantes affectibus (1484) or the Malleus Maleficarum (1487). Despite the damage caused by a fire in the 15th century, the codex was preserved and is today a key piece for understanding medieval legislation on witchcraft.
Ecomuseum of the Valls d'Àneu
Historical milestone
The Ecomuseu de les Valls d'Àneu, devoted to the ethnography of the Àneu valleys and the rest of the Pallars, was inaugurated in 1994 and extends across the municipalities of Esterri d'Àneu, Alt Àneu, Espot and la Guingueta d'Àneu, in the comarca of Pallars Sobirà. It was conceived by Ferran Rella and Cisco Farràs from the Consell Cultural de les Valls d'Àneu and later adapted by Llorenç Prats as a living entity that, based on research, conservation and the dissemination of the integral heritage, documents traditional life in upper Pallars through the Casa Gassia, mills, forges and churches spread across several villages, and recovers ways of life from the late 19th century. It was a pioneer of the ecomuseum model in Catalonia, and in 2020 it received the Creu de Sant Jordi.
