Castle of Castelldans Monument · Castelldans, Garrigues, Lleida Image of Castelldans, not of the place itself. Fortress of Andalusi origin with earliest mentions in the 11th century, today in ruins: two rectangular cisterns survive, one with its barrel vault, stretches of wall, and foundations of square towers about 3.75 x 1.25 m. It passed into Christian hands in 1120, when the governor of Lleida ceded it to Count Ramon Berenguer III; from 1412 it belonged to the Charterhouse of Escaladei. A Civil War bunker and machine-gun nest damaged part of the structure. Photo: jordi domènech (CC BY-SA 3.0) What to see and do in Castelldans
