What to see and do in Cabó

Cabó
Village
Cabó is a small rural municipality in the Alt Urgell, at 768 metres above sea level, with 85 inhabitants spread across the settlements of Cabó, el Vilar de Cabó and el Pujal de Cabó. Its castle is documented as early as 1027 and was associated with the lords of Caboet, a noble family of considerable economic and political power in the Middle Ages who, besides this valley, held the lordship of the valley of Sant Joan and possessions in Andorra; in the 12th century their possessions passed to the bishopric of Urgell. The settlement of Cabó sits at the confluence of two rivers, on a small rise at the foot of the serra de Prada, with exposed-stone houses and gabled roofs dating from the 16th to the 19th centuries. It preserves two Romanesque churches, that of Sant Serni and that of Sant Iscle de Senyús, and lives mainly from dairy farming.
Castle of Cabó
Monument
Romanesque castle from the early 12th century (1115), of which only a few wall fragments survive in the upper part of the village, probably from the fortified perimeter that surrounded the medieval town. Seat of the Cabó lineage, documented since the mid-10th century; in 1185 Arnaua de Caboet married Arnau de Castellbò, uniting the domains with the viscounty of Castellbò. The "Greuges de Guitard Isarn" (c. 1080-1095), one of the oldest written texts in Catalan, records grievances by the lord against the officials of this castle.
