What to see and do in Soriguera

Soriguera
Village
Soriguera is a municipality in the Pallars Sobirà comarca, in the province of Lleida, with its capital at Vilamur, a settlement that stands at 1,175 metres above sea level. Vilamur was the centre of the viscounty of Vilamur and owes its name to its former status as a walled town (vila murada); fragments of the enclosure wall and an access gate are still preserved. The municipality, part of the Alt Pirineu Natural Park, is made up of sixteen population centres and has 446 inhabitants; the Noguera Pallaresa river runs through the territory and the Cantó pass connects it with the Alt Urgell. It preserves the depopulated village of Santa Creu, the medieval settlement of Vilamur and the remains of Arcalís castle, as well as the Orri peak, a 2,400-metre summit with views over the surrounding valleys.
Fortified Enclosure of Vilamur
Monument
The fortified precinct of Vilamur, in the municipality of Soriguera, at 1,289 metres above sea level, was from the late 11th century the patrimony of the viscounts of Pallars, called Siarbensis until in the 12th century they adopted the name Vilamur; several bishops were among them. The title passed in 1381 to Ramon d'Anglesola and in 1386 to Hug Folc II de Cardona, first count of Cardona. Of the complex, the layout of the lanes of the first precinct survives, along with a Romanesque portal with red sandstone voussoirs, a corner tower at the western end, and the church of the Mare de Déu de Medina, from the 12th century and with defensive features. It is declared a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (the highest level of heritage protection in Catalonia).

Viscounty of Vilamur
Historical milestone
The viscountcy of Vilamur, documented since the eleventh century, was one of the seigneurial jurisdictions of the Pallars, with a fortified enclosure of its own on the sunny side of the Noguera Pallaresa. Its viscounts litigated for centuries with the counts.
