What to see and do in Massanes

Massanes
Village
Massanes is a small municipality of the Selva comarca, in the province of Girona, in the Baix Montseny sub-comarca, in the south of the comarca, on the left bank of the river Tordera, at 164 metres above sea level. It has 882 inhabitants (2025). It was part of the Batllia de n'Orri, dependent on the viscounty of Cabrera, and did not become an independent municipality until it separated from Sant Feliu de Buixalleu, then called Vall d'Orri, between 1857 and 1860. In 1713, during the War of the Spanish Succession, the Expedition of the Military Arm reached Massanes, where the fusilier regiments of Ermengol Amill i Moliner and Manuel Moliner i Rau joined, before defeating the Bourbon troops of Hostalric. It preserves the Museum of Compositions and Scores of the master Lluís Duran i Massaguer.
Sant Esteve de Massanes
Monument
Of the parish church of Sant Esteve, located at the western end of the town centre of Massanes, only the Romanesque 11th-century apse is preserved, built in ashlar and decorated with a frieze of Lombard arcading in series of six, topped by a sawtooth frieze; the rest of the building, with side chapels, sacristy and bell tower, essentially dates from the 17th-century work. In 1740 it was completely rebuilt and the Romanesque walls were covered over; the French army destroyed it during the invasion of 1808 and it was reconstructed after the Civil War, in 1939. The church had already been mentioned in a bull of Pope Lucius III in 1185, and in 1903 it was given to the monastery of Breda.
