What to see and do in Sant Feliu de Buixalleu

Sant Feliu de Buixalleu
Village
Sant Feliu de Buixalleu is a mountain municipality of the Selva comarca, scattered between the Montseny and the Guilleries, whose capital is in the district of Grions and which also includes the entities of Gaserans and Sant Feliu de Buixalleu. It has 882 inhabitants and lives on irrigated farming, livestock and industry. Documented as early as the 11th century as Bursoleu, it was part of the viscounty of Cabrera. It preserves Montsoriu Castle, documented since the year 1002 and undergoing restoration, the church of Sant Feliu de Buixalleu with its Romanesque bell tower, and the hermitages of Sant Segimon del Bosc and Santa Bàrbara. According to tradition, it was at the Gorg d'en Perxistor that Count of Barcelona Ramon Berenguer II was murdered in 1082 by his brother.
Church of Sant Feliu de Buixalleu
Monument
A church documented since 1019 that retains much of its 11th-century structure, with a prominent bell tower, twin round-arched windows and an apse largely hidden by the sacristy; a Romanesque doorway with a cylindrical archivolt over carved capitals, now lost, is still known from old photographs.
Tower of la Mora
Monument
Of the Torre de la Mora, a former watchtower on the summit of the turó de la Mora, north of Gaserans (Sant Feliu de Buixalleu), only the base survives, circular in plan and about 9.50 metres in exterior diameter, with walls up to 2 metres thick and a height of just over a metre. A 1996 survey revealed that it was part of an Iberian oppidum of about 80 by 20 metres; excavations place its construction in Roman times, although its last use dates from the 8th-10th centuries, already reused in the Middle Ages as a watch point for the castle of Montsoriu. It dominated the corridor between the Montseny and the Montnegre, through which the Via Augusta passed, and it is believed that, together with the tower of Grions, it relayed signals to the castle during the revolt of Cabrera against Peter III, in 1367.
Tower of Grions
Monument
Former fortified house converted into a masia, located next to the church of Sant Gabriel de Grions, on a hillock near Hostalric, within the municipality of Sant Feliu de Buixalleu. It is documented since 1240, when it was held by the castellans of the castle of Montsoriu, related to the Malla family of the Plana de Vic, and its construction is dated to around the 13th century; the current owning family acquired it in 1933. According to tradition, the name Grions comes from "grillons" (shackles), because prisoners were chained up in the tower. It comprises a wide fortified enclosure of almost square plan, of nearly 800 square metres, with the tower that gives it its name on the western side, next to the entrance gate.
