Planoles
Village
Planoles is a high-mountain municipality in the Ripollès district, in the province of Gerona, in the Vall de Ribes, near the Coll de Toses, with 313 inhabitants, and it also includes the village of Planès. It stands at 1,136 metres above sea level in the valley of the Rigard river, surrounded by Pyrenean peaks over 2,500 metres high, such as the Puig de Dòrria, on the border with France, and Piedra Picada, on the boundary with Toses and Gombrèn, within the Serra de Montgrony. Within its territory lies the Corral Blanc refuge, a starting point for mountain excursions in this Pyrenean headwater area of the Ter.
Sant Vicenç de Planoles
Monument
The church of Sant Vicenç de Planoles, first documented in 1141 although the place of Planoles is already mentioned in 938, is a notable Romanesque building from the 11th-12th centuries, restored in the late 20th century. It was initially a single-nave church with a semicircular apse decorated with a frieze of Lombard-type arcading and covered with a quarter-sphere vault, with a barrel vault reinforced by five transverse arches and a 12th-century baptismal font. In the 18th century it was enlarged with a second nave, part of which occupies a former atrium of the Romanesque church recovered in the last restoration; of the three columns of that porch, only one is original, while the other two imitate its style.
