Castle of Toses Monument · Toses, Ripollès, Girona The Castell de Toses stands on the hill called Castellassos, above the town of Toses (Ripollès, Girona), at 1,529 metres of altitude, at the top of the Toses pass. Today barely any remains survive: a small elliptical rise measuring 8 by 20 metres, bordered on the north side by the line of what was a moat 2 metres wide and 20 metres long. The first documentary record of the castle dates from 1284, when King James II of Majorca granted it in fief to Blanca d'Urtx and her son; it later passed to the Mataplana family, and in the 16th century the barony of Pinós and Mataplana was joined to the dukes of Alba. It is classified as bien cultural de interés nacional (BCIN 1689-MH; Catalonia's highest level of cultural heritage protection). Photo: CT Vall de Ribes (CC BY-SA 3.0) What to see and do in Toses
