House of the Templars Monument · Aiguaviva, Gironès, Girona A former commandery of the Order of the Temple, also known as the Temple de Santa Magdalena because of the adjoining Romanesque chapel, with a 16th-century construction over an earlier 13th-century structure, declared bien cultural de interés nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection). Documented since 1192 as the seat of the commander of the bailiwick of Girona, it had an agricultural rather than defensive character. Of the original plan only the main façade survives, with a coat of arms divided into two quarters, that of the Order and that of a manor house, and a Gothic inscription. After the dissolution of the Temple in 1318 it passed to the Order of the Hospital, being documented in the 17th century as 'casa dita del Temple de Santa Magdalena'. A large courtyard separates the main body from the livestock buildings and storehouses. Photo: Josep Maria Viñolas Esteva (CC BY-SA 4.0) What to see and do in Aiguaviva
