Village
Montagut i Oix is a mountain municipality in the north of the Garrotxa, in Girona, formed from the former municipalities of Montagut, in the Baixa Garrotxa, and Oix, in the Alta Garrotxa, united in 1972 and bearing the joint name since 2002. Its territory, with streams that are tributaries of the Llierca to the east and bathed by the Fluvià to the south, reaches 1,558 metres at Puig Comanegra, on the French border, while the capital, Montagut, stands at 276. It preserves a notable Romanesque heritage: the parish of Sant Pere de Montagut, from the 10th century, the church of Sant Llorenç de Oix and the monastery of Sant Aniol d'Aguja, founded in 859 by abbot Racimir, as well as several churches declared historic-artistic monuments. Several castles are also preserved in its territory. It has 1,011 inhabitants.
Monument
Montagut Castle, or del Cós, stands atop the hill of Montagut (612 m), in Montagut i Oix (Garrotxa). The site appears in a Carolingian charter of the year 898, and Count Sunifred of Besalú and Cerdanya already mentions the parish of Sant Pere de Montagut in his will of 966; the first record of the castle itself, cited as «castrum de Monte Acuto quod vocant Corz», dates from between 1070 and 1100. It consisted of a tower and walls with an outer moat; today only the lower part of the medieval tower remains. A circular tower survives, restored in the 19th century during the Carlist War, next to the parade ground where the chapel of Nostra Dona del Cos stands, built over the former church of Sant Pere. It has been a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional since 1988 (Spain's highest level of heritage protection; BCIN 1054-MH).
Monument
Oix castle, documented since 1270 and rebuilt in the second half of the 15th century by the Barutell family, lords of Bestracà, is today an inhabited farmhouse with a rectangular plan, an interior courtyard, a round-arched doorway and a large trilobed Gothic window; an Asset of National Cultural Interest (BCIN RI-51-0005959).
Monument
Located a short distance from the village of Talaixà, next to the path leading to the Comanegra and on a small knoll, the Torre de Talaixà is a rectangular watchtower adapted to the terrain, today in ruins. The voussoirs that formed the entrance doorway can still be made out, and the walls are built of large, roughly worked stones. According to studies by Ramon Sala and Narcís Puigdevall, its structure allows it to be dated to the turn of the 14th-15th centuries. It was declared a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) on 8 November 1988 (BCIN 1058-MH).
Monument
Remains of a castle located atop vertical rocks above the Gorja d'en Roca, near the village of Sadernes, in the municipality of Montagut i Oix (Garrotxa). Documented in 1261 and probably linked to the barony of Sales, it was never a large fortress but a small fortified outpost from which the passage toward the lands of Sant Aniol i Bassegoda and, beyond, toward France was watched. Today only well-cut ashlars survive, widely scattered, which prevent the reconstruction of its original layout. The site is also an archaeological deposit: fragments of lithic industry and two bronze axes from the Palaeolithic and the Final Bronze Age have been found there, remains of a flint workshop declared a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 1949.
Monument
The Castell de Montpetit is a fortification in the municipality of Montagut i Oix (Garrotxa) documented since the 11th century as the castrum de Toraies, although there is doubt about its location: some authors place it at the top of Montpetit, where only scant structural remains survive -perhaps of a simple watchtower-, and others near the church of Sant Martí de Toralles. It belonged to the counts of Besalú in the 11th century and later passed to the counts of Bas; in 1315 count Magaulín swore fealty to king James the Just, and in 1463 king James II incorporated it into the crown. In 1599 king Philip III used it to establish the county of Montagut, which ended up in the hands of the marquises of Aguilar, lords of Empordà castle. It has been a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (BCIN 1056-MH, Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection) since 1988.
Monument
The Castell de Pera is a fortified house in the village of Sant Miquel de Pera, in the municipality of Montagut i Oix (Garrotxa). It is documented as a lordship since the 17th century: in 1652 the merchant Josep Sivilla appears as lord of the castle and the territory of Sant Miquel de Pera, and in 1764 king Charles III granted the title of baron of Sant Miquel de Pera to his son-in-law. Located next to the church of Sant Miquel de Pera, it has a rectangular plan, built of unworked local stone except at the corners and openings; the ground floor, used for livestock, has three large round arches of well-cut ashlar, while upstairs there is a spacious manorial hall, and the upper loft was used to store grain and straw. It is a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (BCIN 1057-MH, Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection).
Monument
Cabeces is a large manor house situated a short distance from the church of Sant Miquel d'Hortmoier, within the valley of the same name, in the municipality of Montagut i Oix. It has a rectangular plan with a broad gable roof and consists of a ground floor, living quarters and an attic: the ground floor, used for livestock, has two voussoir-arched doors on the south and west façades, while the door giving access to the living quarters opens to the north. It is dotted with numerous slender loopholes spread across all its façades, and has later additions of much more recent construction attached to it. Listed as a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection), no historical date for its construction has been published.
