Sespasa Castle Monument · Montagut i Oix, Garrotxa, Girona Remains of a castle located atop vertical rocks above the Gorja d'en Roca, near the village of Sadernes, in the municipality of Montagut i Oix (Garrotxa). Documented in 1261 and probably linked to the barony of Sales, it was never a large fortress but a small fortified outpost from which the passage toward the lands of Sant Aniol i Bassegoda and, beyond, toward France was watched. Today only well-cut ashlars survive, widely scattered, which prevent the reconstruction of its original layout. The site is also an archaeological deposit: fragments of lithic industry and two bronze axes from the Palaeolithic and the Final Bronze Age have been found there, remains of a flint workshop declared a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 1949.
