What to see and do in Vilamaniscle

Vilamaniscle
Village
Vilamaniscle is a municipality in the comarca of the Alt Empordà, located in the western part of the serra de la Baga d'en Ferran, an extension of the sierra de l'Albera, with 185 inhabitants (INE 2025). Surrounded by mountains, with forests of pines and cork oaks, olive groves and vineyards are cultivated on its land, whose wine is appreciated throughout the comarca and is today protected by the DO Empordà designation. At the highest point of the village stands a large, half-ruined house known as the castle of Vilamaniscle, already documented at the end of the 10th century or the beginning of the 11th as a feudal possession of the abbot of Sant Quirze de Colera, which over the centuries has grown to take on the appearance of a large manor house. In the surrounding area megalithic remains are preserved, among them the Pedra Dreta, a menhir three metres high.
Castle of Vilamaniscle (Can Gorgot)
Monument
Can Gorgot, also known as the Castell de Vilamaniscle, is a fortified manor house from the 17th century in the upper part of the village, declared Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection). It has the appearance neither of a fortress nor of a palace, but of a large fortified farmhouse, whose enormous proportions and dominant position earned it the nickname of castle. On the façade a round-arched voussoired portal stands out, crowned by a Baroque emblem bearing the inscription Nada sin Dios; above it remain two corbels of a former defensive machicolation. The property belonged to the Gorgot family from 1651, when Joan Gorgot i Llombart, enriched through trade, bought the castle and the territory of Vilamaniscle from the noble Lanuça family. The building, in ruins, has been the subject of a restoration project since 2022.
Pedra Dreta (Mas Roqué Menhir)
Curiosity
A slate menhir 3.60 metres high, dated to around 3000 BC and considered one of the tallest and most spectacular of the l'Albera megalithic group. Also known as the Pedra dreta de Vilamaniscle, it stands beside the road leading from Rabós to the Romanesque monastery of Sant Quirze de Colera, near the turn-off to Vilamaniscle, and takes its name from a nearby farmhouse (mas) of the same name. It has two bases, as it stands on a terraced plot (feixa), and a cross was placed on its top in the past to Christianise this pagan monument. Local tradition holds that, because of its depth, if you put your ear to the stone you can hear the sea.
