What to see and do in Vilajuïga

Vilajuïga
Village
Vilajuïga is a municipality of 1,177 inhabitants (INE 2025) situated at the foot of the Sierra de Rodes, in the Alt Empordà, province of Girona, with vineyards of the Empordà designation of origin. In the early Middle Ages it belonged to the county of Empúries, and from the 10th century it was a possession of the monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes. On a nearby summit stands the castle of Quermançó, already documented in 1078 and occupied in the 15th century by the troops of John II; today it is half in ruins. The village holds several megalithic dolmens -Caiguts, Ruïnes, la Talaia, Garrollar and la Vinya del Rei- and the church of Sant Feliu, of Romanesque origin and remodelled in the 18th-19th centuries. A nearby Republican airfield suffered a severe attack by the Condor Legion in 1939.
Castle of Quermançó
Monument
The castell de Quermançó is an isolated fortification on a steep crag, two kilometres north of Vilajuïga, inaccessible from the west and south; it is an example of the early medieval Catalan castles capable of withstanding the siege of forces far superior to the few defenders that its enclosure could hold. It belonged to the counts of Empúries: Ponce I installed the county's diplomatic archive there and, by a will of 1078, left the castle to his sons Hugo and Berenguer. From Dalmau Berenguer de Quermançó, documented since 1099, descends the lineage of the viscounts later called of Rocabertí. In 1288 it was briefly occupied by a French army in the service of James II of Mallorca. Declared Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection), it preserves walls, the base of the keep and a cistern.
Church of Sant Feliu de Vilajuïga
Monument
Church located in the historic centre of Vilajuïga, between the streets of l'Església and del Call, popularly known as “the synagogue”, a name that refers to the site of “villa Iudaica” documented as a possession of the monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes in 982 and 990, within the County of Empúries. It preserves, from the first half of the 11th century, the façade and part of the Romanesque nave, a single nave with a barrel vault divided into three bays by transverse arches, with a round-arched portal, a sawtooth archivolt and a drip moulding. Between the 17th and 18th centuries a larger new church was built alongside it, which today holds worship while the Romanesque nave serves as a vestibule; in that extension materials from the original temple were reused, such as the exterior cornice.
