What to see and do in Rabós

Rabós
Village
Rabós, also known as Rabós de l'Empordà, is a municipality in the comarca of the Alt Empordà, in the province of Girona, with 232 inhabitants (INE 2025), which also includes the hamlet of Delfià. It is a wine-growing village on the slope of the Albera, with rugged terrain covered in cork-oak woods; the vineyards, once dominant, declined after the phylloxera blight that devastated them in 1860. The territory is surrounded by megalithic remains, including the Mas Roquer menhir and several dolmens, and is home to the monastery of Sant Quirze de Colera, from the 10th century, whose abbots founded the town, as well as the Romanesque churches of Sant Julià de Rabós, from 1313, and Santa Maria de Colera, from the 12th century. The village keeps up a deeply rooted grape-harvest festival.
Monastery of Sant Quirze de Colera
Monument
Benedictine abbey of the former county of Empúries, within the diocese of Girona, located in the municipality of Rabós, in the Alt Empordà, next to the old road to the coll de Banyuls. The complex brings together the basilica of Sant Quirze, monastic quarters around a cloister, a defence tower, remains of a wall, the church of Santa María and the ruins of the former hospital, and it is declared Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection). The church, basilical in plan with three naves, a transept and three apses facing east, preserves Lombard decoration on the apse end and a west façade with a double round arch; a bell-gable crowns the complex, built of roughly worked stone laid in courses.
The arrival of phylloxera in Catalonia
Historical milestone
In 1879 the first outbreak of phylloxera south of the Pyrenees was detected in the municipal area of Rabós, at the Collado de Fornells opposite Sant Quirze de Colera; within a few years the plague devastated the Catalan vineyards and forced them to be replanted on American rootstock.
