What to see and do in Garriguella

Garriguella
Village
Garriguella is a municipality in the Alt Empordà located at the foot of the Sierra de l'Albera, with 989 inhabitants. Its dry-farmed fields, with cereals, olive trees and vines, and the production of wines and liqueurs form the basis of its economy, sustained by an important agricultural cooperative. The settlement is split between Garriguella and Noves, where the 18th-19th century parish church of Santa Eulàlia de Noves stands, preserving remains of an 11th-century pre-Romanesque temple belonging to the monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes. Next to the sanctuary of the Mare de Déu del Camp, a former priory, is the Albera Tortoise Breeding Centre. On the puig de la Mala Veïna the remains of an old defence tower are preserved.
Republican Airfield of Mas Llunes
Curiosity
The remains of the last airfield of the Republican air force retreating towards France, active until 6 February 1939 and spread across the municipalities of Garriguella, Vilajuïga and Pedret i Marzà; a memorial space now stands at Mas Llunes.
Muscatel of the Empordà
Food and drink
A natural sweet wine of the DO Empordà made with muscat grapes, a minority alongside garnacha but with a long tradition in the wine villages at the foot of the Albera; aromatic and golden in color, it accompanies desserts and cured cheeses.
