What to see and do in Colera

Colera
Village
Colera, formerly called San Miguel de Culera, is a small coastal village of the Alt Empordà, in the province of Girona, situated in a quiet cove between Llançà and Portbou; it became an independent municipality in 1936, when it split off from Portbou. Its rugged coastline stretches from the boundary with Portbou to Cap Ras, and its rugged, mountainous territory reaches 740 metres in the sierra de l'Albera, the border with France; the remains of the monastery of Sant Quirze de Colera are preserved there. The village has a modest fishing harbour and two beaches separated by the Punta dels Canons. Its festivals are the new honey fair, around St John's Day, and the Festa Major de San Miguel, at the end of September. It has 494 inhabitants and lives mainly from tourism.
Castle of Molinàs
Monument
The Castell de Molinàs, or de Molinars, a Romanesque work of the 12th-13th centuries, stands in ruins to the west of the hamlet of Colera, in the vall de Molinàs, which is reached by the same forest track that leads up to the church of Sant Miquel de Colera. Rectangular in plan, it preserves two building blocks; the north-facing wall, about ten metres high, has three rows of loopholes and a well-preserved machicolation. Built with slabs of slate bonded with mud, it lacks precise historical records, although it has been linked to the "guàrdia de moros" documented in the 10th century or to a tower mentioned in the consecration records of the monastery of Sant Quirc de Colera from the years 935 and 1123.
Beach of Garbet
Nature
Garbet beach, in the municipality of Colera (Alt Empordà), is made up of sand, gravel and pebbles, with a width of 33 metres and a length of 449, and lies at the head of the bay of Garbet, facing east; at its southern end there is a sea rock known, as elsewhere on this coast, as Cavall Bernat. A restaurant at the edge of the beach operated between 1948 and 2018, the year its concession ended, which has allowed the area to return to a natural state; until 2009 there was also a campsite at the northern end, today converted into a municipal car park. It retains an old railway station, now unused, which once served summer bathers. The Catalan Water Agency checks the quality of its waters weekly, rated excellent.
Rovellada Cove
Nature
One of Colera's beaches, of sand and pebbles, sheltered among rocks in a largely undeveloped setting.
Coastal Path: Colera - Llançà
Activity
The camí de ronda coastal path between Colera and Llançà, in the Alt Empordà, coincides with the stretch of the GR-92 that links the two towns along the northern coast of the comarca. The route passes by coves such as Garbet beach and, already near Llançà, El Cros beach, a semi-urban cove 166 metres long with coarse sand and gravel, separated from Canyelles beach by the Cros point and adjoining Sota d'en Canals beach. It is one of the best-preserved stretches of the northern coast of the Alt Empordà.
Abandoned Village of Molinàs
Curiosity
A former hamlet in the Albera range that once had around a hundred inhabitants working its mills and olive presses, finally abandoned in the 1970s after phylloxera and the great frost of 1956; it retains ruined houses and, nearby, the remains of a castle.
