What to see and do in Palau-saverdera

Palau-saverdera
Village
Palau-saverdera is a village in the Alt Empordà, in the province of Gerona, with 1,535 inhabitants (INE 2025), known as the balcony of the Empordà for its viewpoints over the plain and the Bay of Roses from the slopes of the Sierra de Rodes and Verdera, whose peak reaches 670 metres. Documented since the year 882, it belonged to the county of Ampurias and lives from dry farming of cereals, olives and vines. It preserves the 11th-century Romanesque church of Sant Joan, with three apses of Lombard decoration and a rebuilt bell-gable, as well as a castle with two circular towers and several megalithic dolmens, such as those of Mas Bofill and la Devesa.
Castle of Palau-saverdera
Monument
Remains of the medieval castle that gives its name to the village, located at the foot of the sierra de Rodes, in the old quarter of Palau-saverdera, between the plaza Mayor and the calle Puigmal. Built in the 15th century by the Vilamarí family on top of an earlier fortification, it preserves three of the four corner towers that delimited the walled enclosure; the most notable is the Tower of the Hours, about 14 metres high and 4.5 wide, built of granite and slate. In 1462 it sheltered the local population during the siege of the Catalan civil war. It is declared Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection).
Tower of el Vent
Monument
The Torre del Vent is a former mill located on the summit of the hill of the same name, within the Aiguamolls de l'Empordà Natural Park, declared a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection). It is a circular structure, built of unworked stone and brick, which originally had a ground floor and one upper floor, conceived both as a mill for grinding grain and as a dwelling; today it has lost its entire upper finish. It is believed to have been built between the 17th and 18th centuries, and the first written reference mentioning it dates from 1771. Around 1818 it belonged to Abdó Oriol, who also owned the mill of Mas Oriol; at that time grain cultivation predominated in the area, which by the mid-19th century gave way to vineyards, and the mill fell into disuse: the 1873 census already records it as being in ruins.
Palau (de Dalt) Pond
Nature
The Estany de Palau de Dalt is a wetland lying between the municipalities of Pau and Palau-saverdera, within the Integral Nature Reserve of the Estanys, in the Aiguamolls de l'Empordà natural park, between the Estany de Vilaüt and the Estany de Palau de Baix, with which it forms a single unit. It covers 27.65 hectares of former ponds drained in the 18th century and now converted into closes, a traditional agro-pastoral system of meadows enclosed by deciduous trees and drainage channels that allow the land to be flooded and washed of salts. Its vegetation of reed beds, glasswort marshes and tamarisk groves harbours habitats of Community interest and makes the area a key zone for breeding, wintering and migratory stopover for waterbirds.
Mas Ventós
Nature
A natural leisure area amid pine woods on the path to the monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes, with picnic tables and the remains of an old farmhouse.
Horseback Riding Routes through the Aiguamolls de l'Empordà
Activity
Equestrian centres next to the Aiguamolls Natural Park offer lessons and horse rides across the Empordà plain.
Dolmen of la Fontasia
Nature
The central point of the Fontasia megalithic trail, linking four dolmens and a menhir in one of the municipalities with the highest density of prehistoric monuments in the Albera.
