What to see and do in la Selva de Mar

la Selva de Mar
Village
La Selva de Mar is a simple, quiet inland village at the foot of the Sierra de Rodes, on the Cape Creus peninsula, and the traditional gateway on foot to the monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes and the castle of Sant Salvador de Verdera. The riera de la Selva runs through the village before flowing into the sea; its seafaring quarter, the present-day Port de la Selva, became independent by decree of Charles III in 1787. It retains slate buildings, small bridges over the riera, an old public wash-house and four defence towers with remains of the wall, as well as stones plundered from the monastery. The oldest surviving document, a 7th-century letter, already mentions a chapel in the village, when the forest still covered the surroundings, the origin of its name. It has 223 inhabitants.
