What to see and do in Bàscara

Bàscara
Village
Bàscara, in the south of the Alt Empordà, on the border with the Pla de l'Estany and the Gironès, sits on a crag above the Fluvià river, which marks the boundary with Pontós; the village stands at 66 metres above sea level. Already documented in 817 as 'villa Baschara', a possession of the bishopric of Girona, it retains stretches of its 13th-14th century walls, rebuilt in the 18th-19th centuries, and the castle, both declared a cultural asset. Located on the traditional road to France, it was a stagecoach stop and a strategic point occupied by French troops in 1675, 1683 and during the Peninsular War, in 1808 and 1809. Bishop Ramon Guissall instituted a weekly market in 1187, a tradition that survives today in the Tortells Market, held every spring. It has 1,049 inhabitants (INE 2025).
Castle of Bàscara
Monument
A castle of medieval origin, once owned by the bishops of Girona, with a round tower that served as a prison and remains of the walls that once encircled the old town.
Castle of Calabuig
Monument
Remains of a medieval castle built into the wall of the church of Sant Feliu, in the hamlet of Calabuig, with visible loopholes from the old fortification. The old castle was destroyed on the order of James I in 1275, and on its site the church of Sant Feliu de Calabuig was built in 1691, a population centre of Bàscara set on a hill next to the right bank of the Fluvià river, from where part of the Alt Empordà can be seen. In the old territory of the village remains of the Priory of Sant Nicolau and of the ruined church of Sant Miquel de Terrades are also preserved. Calabuig was incorporated into the municipality of Bàscara in 1846, together with Orriols.
Castle of Orriols
Monument
Fortified manor house in the hamlet of Orriols, in the municipality of Bàscara, declared Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection). The original castle is already documented in 1021, in the will of Count Bernat Tallaferro, and its lords engaged in litigation with the Count of Empúries and the lord of Rocabertí; in 1381 it was bombarded with stones by the troops of Count Joan I of Empúries. It was later rebuilt as a large fortified manor with two towers and loopholes, and two phases can be distinguished: the 16th-17th centuries on the main façade, facing west, with a large round-arched portal and windows crowned by triangular pediments with carved faces, and the 18th century on the east façade. After serving as two farmhouses, it is today privately owned and in 2024 was put up for auction together with the tenant farmers' house.
