What to see and do in Avinyonet de Puigventós

Avinyonet de Puigventós
Village
Avinyonet de Puigventós is an agricultural centre of the Alt Empordà, between the Empordà plain and the Garrotxa, with fine views from the Puig Ventós (163.4 m); part of its territory forms the Garriga d'Empordà natural area. It has 1,671 inhabitants (INE 2025). The village grew up beside a castle of the military Order of the Hospital from the 13th century until 1804, already in the 19th century, of which remains survive today beside the church of Sant Esteve; its coat of arms, with the Hospitaller cross, recalls that Avinyonet was the seat of a commandery of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem in 1257. The old medieval quarter retains narrow, sloping streets with houses from the 16th to the 18th century, large in size and with Gothic-Renaissance windows. Until 1916 the municipality was simply called Avinyonet.
Castle of Avinyonet (Comanda Hospitalera)
Monument
The castell d'Avinyonet was, from 1257, the seat of the commandery of the Order of the Hospital in what is now the municipality of Avinyonet de Puigventós, in the Alt Empordà; the castle was already known of in the 12th century, and its first commander was Gombau de Vallfort. During the 15th century it was joined to the commandery of Castelló d'Empúries and later to that of Sant Llorenç de les Arenes; in 1610 the commander was Felip d'Olms, who also held that post in Aiguaviva. The commandery existed until 1804, although by the modern era it was already in decline. Of the castle a section of the wall and a voussoired doorway survive; its church, dedicated to Sant Joan, became the town hall in 1907, while the parish church, dedicated to Sant Esteve, has fortified elements, probably built with the help of the Hospitallers.
