Vilafant
Village
Vilafant is a municipality of the Alt Empordà, in the centre of the comarca, with urban continuity with Figueres, with 5,663 inhabitants. Documented in 1017 in a bull of Pope Benedict VIII in favour of the monastery of Sant Esteve de Banyoles, it had in the 17th century one of the most important brick-making industries in the province of Girona. It retains the parish church of Sant Cebrià, from the 12th century and rebuilt in the 18th, and the Palol Sabaldòria complex, atop a hill, with Iberian and Roman archaeological remains, a pre-Romanesque church, a medieval castle and the Palol farmhouse, from the 16th century. Within its territory lies the Figueres-Vilafant high-speed rail station.
