Castle of Avinyonet (Comanda Hospitalera) Monument · Avinyonet de Puigventós, Alt Empordà, Girona The castell d'Avinyonet was, from 1257, the seat of the commandery of the Order of the Hospital in what is now the municipality of Avinyonet de Puigventós, in the Alt Empordà; the castle was already known of in the 12th century, and its first commander was Gombau de Vallfort. During the 15th century it was joined to the commandery of Castelló d'Empúries and later to that of Sant Llorenç de les Arenes; in 1610 the commander was Felip d'Olms, who also held that post in Aiguaviva. The commandery existed until 1804, although by the modern era it was already in decline. Of the castle a section of the wall and a voussoired doorway survive; its church, dedicated to Sant Joan, became the town hall in 1907, while the parish church, dedicated to Sant Esteve, has fortified elements, probably built with the help of the Hospitallers.
