Church of Cardedeu Monument · Cardedeu, Vallès Oriental, Barcelona Image of Cardedeu, not of the place itself. The parish church of Cardedeu, dedicated to Santa María, is the town's main temple, in the Vallès Oriental (Barcelona). The existence of a Christian community in Cardedeu is documented for the first time in the 11th century, and the present building, which retains earlier Romanesque elements, was built between the 16th and 18th centuries. It was deliberately burned in 1873, during the Carlist war, and again in 1939, at the end of the Civil War, being rebuilt after both episodes. Notable features include its square-plan bell tower 27 metres high, a sculpted portal of 1780, a 16th-century baptismal font, and the frescoes by Antoni Vila Arrufat in the chapel of the Sacrament.
