What to see and do in Olesa de Montserrat

Olesa de Montserrat
Village
Olesa de Montserrat is a town in the Baix Llobregat district, in the province of Barcelona, with about 25,000 inhabitants, crossed by the river Llobregat, which separates it from Esparraguera. It borders Vacarisses to the north, Viladecavalls to the east and Abrera to the south, in a Mediterranean climate with warm summers and mild winters. It is known for its artisanal olive oil production and, above all, for the Passió d'Olesa, one of the oldest Passion plays in Catalonia, performed by amateur actors from the town.

Monument
Former monastery of Olesa de Montserrat, for centuries the setting for the Passió d'Olesa, a theatrical representation of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The oldest document referring to this tradition dates from 1538 and is kept in the parish archive. The performance takes place during the months of February, March and April.
The Passion of Olesa de Montserrat
Activity
La Passió d'Olesa de Montserrat is one of the oldest representations of the Passion of Christ in Catalonia, documented since 1538 in the parish archive of Olesa, probably originating in the liturgical Holy Week performances of the Middle Ages. It is staged every year, between March and April, at the Nou Teatre de la Passió, inaugurated on 1 May 1987 and designed by the architect Jan Baca i Pericot, with a stage more than 30 metres wide and capacity for 1,496 spectators. Hundreds of volunteer residents of Olesa take part; in 1996, 729 actors gathered on stage at once, a Guinness record. Since 2022 the performance has lasted a little under two hours in two acts. In 2002 it received the Creu de Sant Jordi, becoming the first of the Catalan passion plays to be honoured with this distinction.
