What to see and do in l'Estany

L'Estany
Village
L'Estany is a small municipality in the north of the Moianès, in the province of Barcelona, at 870 metres above sea level, which takes its name from the old lake drained in 1570 by abbot Carles de Cardona and from the Romanesque monastery of Santa Maria de l'Estany, documented since 927 and raised to an abbey in 1264. The church, restored, and a magnificent cloister with 72 capitals on biblical, heraldic and floral themes are preserved, along with a small museum devoted to the history of the monastery. The village, with its stone houses and mountain rural appearance, grew up beside the monastery and lived from farming and livestock until small textile industries arrived in the early 20th century.
Monastery of Santa Maria de l'Estany
Monument
The monestir de Santa Maria de l'Estany is a former monastery of Augustinian canons from the 12th and 13th centuries, founded in 1080 in the municipality of l'Estany, in the Moianès, in a small valley surrounded by mountains over a thousand metres high where a pond once formed that gave the place its name. Declared a cultural asset of national interest and a historic-artistic monument in 1931, it has been the village's parish church since the early 19th century, today attached to the rector of Santa Maria de Moià. Its cloister, one of the jewels of Catalan Romanesque art, brings together 72 capitals with biblical, heraldic and floral themes. In the former abbey quarters a museum and an archive with documentation dating back to the 11th century are preserved, and the former abbot's house today houses the town hall.
L'Estany Main Festival
Activity
The Festa Major de l'Estany is the main festival of this town in the comarca of Moianès (Barcelona), located next to the monastery of Santa Maria de l'Estany. It was traditionally celebrated on 8 September.
The Augustinian canonry of l'Estany
Historical milestone
In 1080 a community of Augustinian canons was constituted beside the former lake which raised a church and cloister. Elevated to an abbey in 1264, it maintained twelve canons and as many beneficiaries until its dissolution in 1775.
The 1448 earthquake
Historical milestone
The earthquake that shook Catalonia in 1448 brought down the vaults and the bell tower of the monastery church. The repair works were considered finished in 1451 and explain the mixture of masonry visible today in the building.
