Monastery of Santa Maria de l'Estany Monument · l'Estany, Moianès, Barcelona The monestir de Santa Maria de l'Estany is a former monastery of Augustinian canons from the 12th and 13th centuries, founded in 1080 in the municipality of l'Estany, in the Moianès, in a small valley surrounded by mountains over a thousand metres high where a pond once formed that gave the place its name. Declared a cultural asset of national interest and a historic-artistic monument in 1931, it has been the village's parish church since the early 19th century, today attached to the rector of Santa Maria de Moià. Its cloister, one of the jewels of Catalan Romanesque art, brings together 72 capitals with biblical, heraldic and floral themes. In the former abbey quarters a museum and an archive with documentation dating back to the 11th century are preserved, and the former abbot's house today houses the town hall.
