Castle of la Popa Monument · Castellcir, Moianès, Barcelona The castle of la Popa, a boundary castle of Castellcir documented since 1014, stands on a rock without foundations, at the highest point of the village. Of the original enclosure, today in an advanced state of decay and threatened with ruin, stretches of wall survive, along with the remains of the main building and the chapel of Sant Martí de la Roca, an ensemble covering about 570 m² divided into a fortress of ground floor and two storeys. It was linked to the Castellcir dynasty, who held it in fief paying tribute to the monastery of l'Estany; after the family nearly disappeared with the Black Death of 1348, the castle passed to the Centelles, then to the Planella, and, as early as 1942, to Federico Torelló i Cendra. It is included on the Red List of Heritage at Risk of Hispania Nostra. Photo: Preconsat (Public domain) What to see and do in Castellcir
