What to see and do in Corbera de Llobregat

Corbera de Llobregat
Village
Corbera de Llobregat is a municipality in the Baix Llobregat comarca, in the province of Barcelona, located 30 kilometres from the capital, on the right bank of the river Llobregat. The village stands at 210 metres above sea level, and its territory extends to the Ordal ranges, whose highest point, the Puig d'Agulles, reaches 653 metres. It has 16,010 inhabitants spread across three population centres and numerous urbanisations, many of which arose as second homes and have today become primary residences owing to the proximity of Barcelona. It preserves the old castle of Corbera and the manor house of Santa Magdalena.
Former Castle of Corbera
Monument
A Gothic castle documented since 1031; after the Catalan Civil War, Elionor de Corbera recovered possession of it in 1481, and Benet Miquel de Corbera thoroughly renovated it in 1496. Philip V ordered its demolition in 1714, and its last remains disappeared in 1948-1950 when a new rectory was built with its stones.
Manor House of Santa Magdalena
Monument
The Casal de Santa Magdalena, or of the Barons of Corbera, was built in the 15th century as a hostel for pilgrims and devotees of Santa Magdalena, in the municipality of Corbera de Llobregat. In 1714, after the demolition of the barony's castle by order of Philip V, the king granted this building to Baron Josep Móra i Solanell as compensation, since he had no place to store the oil and wine from his lands; the baron added a storey and renovated it. Rectangular in plan, 36 by 13 metres, with two floors under an Arab-style tiled roof, it is built of red sandstone and preserves Gothic ogee-arched windows and, on the east façade, a coat of arms bearing the Corbera raven. After a legal dispute settled in 1817, the casal belonged to the barons of Corbera until 1948, when it passed to the Diocese of Barcelona.
New Cross of Corbera
Monument
Also called the Creu del Pontarró, it was erected in 1617 to commemorate a healing attributed to Mary Magdalene; destroyed during the Sexenio Revolucionario (1868-1874), it was rebuilt in 1883 and suffered further damage to its top in 1936. It is one of the few covered wayside crosses that survive in Catalonia.
Phylloxera and the end of Corbera's vineyard
Historical milestone
In the nineteenth century all the slopes of Corbera were planted with vines. The arrival of phylloxera at the end of the century ruined the young vineyards and the district became covered with woodland and wasteland, while the economy turned towards lime and gypsum.
