What to see and do in Abrera

Abrera
Village
Abrera is a municipality in the north-west of the Baix Llobregat, in the province of Barcelona, on both banks of the river Llobregat, 39 kilometres from Barcelona, with the termenat castle of Voltrera among its heritage. The municipal territory, of almost 20 km², extends along the Llobregat valley from the sierra d'en Ribes to the boundary with Martorell; its first settlements were Iberian, with grain silos on a route for exporting cereal to the coast. In Roman times there was a villa here, possibly Villa Alba, near Ad Fines, today Martorell; after this was depopulated in the early Middle Ages, Villa Alba became a hamlet next to the pre-Romanesque church of Sant Hilari, from the 9th century, preserved to this day. The municipality is organised around the urban centre, Santa María de Vilalba and several urbanisations.
Castle of Voltrera
Monument
The castle of Voltrera, in the municipal area of Abrera, is a work declared bien cultural de interés nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection), made up of still-notable wall remains, next to the Romanesque chapel of Sant Pere, very close by and also in ruins. This chapel, with a nave and a semicircular apse with two apsidioles in the lateral walls and Lombard decoration on the north façade, is the oldest part of the complex, dated to around the 11th century; the rest was heavily altered in modern times, under the lordship of the Despalau and Amat families. The territory of Voltrera is mentioned from 996, but the castle is not documented until 1027, with Ramon Guillem de Voltrera as lord, a vassal of his brother, the lord of Castellví. It belonged to the barony of Castellví de Rosanes and since the 16th century has also been called the castle of Vilalba.
