The Passion of Olesa de Montserrat Activity · Olesa de Montserrat, Baix Llobregat, Barcelona La Passió d'Olesa de Montserrat is one of the oldest representations of the Passion of Christ in Catalonia, documented since 1538 in the parish archive of Olesa, probably originating in the liturgical Holy Week performances of the Middle Ages. It is staged every year, between March and April, at the Nou Teatre de la Passió, inaugurated on 1 May 1987 and designed by the architect Jan Baca i Pericot, with a stage more than 30 metres wide and capacity for 1,496 spectators. Hundreds of volunteer residents of Olesa take part; in 1996, 729 actors gathered on stage at once, a Guinness record. Since 2022 the performance has lasted a little under two hours in two acts. In 2002 it received the Creu de Sant Jordi, becoming the first of the Catalan passion plays to be honoured with this distinction.
