What to see and do in Fonollosa

Fonollosa
Village
Fonollosa is a rural municipality in the Bages comarca, in the province of Barcelona, made up of four settlements: Camps, Canet de Fals, Fals and Fonollosa. It lies on the southern slope of the Serra de Castelltallat, in the valley of the Fonollosa stream, a tributary of the Cardener, between the Fonollosa and Fals plateaus, covered in pine and holm-oak woods. It has 1570 inhabitants, and its economy combines dry farming, with cereals, vines, olives and almonds, and pig, cattle and poultry farms. At Fals, next to the church, stand the two towers of the old castle, documented shortly after the year 1000 and declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 1988. Also at Fals is the Romanesque hermitage of Santa María del Grau, from the 13th century. The municipality also preserves a 12th-century tower.
Castle of Fals
Monument
The Torres de Fals, together with the old parish church of Sant Vicenç and the rectory, form the complex that occupies the site of the castle of Fals, in Fals, municipality of Fonollosa. The castle was the key that opened and closed the royal road from Barcelona to Cardona, and for that reason it was always under the rule of the lords of Cardona; the earliest mentions date from 996, and in 1314 it became attached to the viscounty organised by Ramon Folc VI de Cardona. Of the two circular towers that survive, the older one, adjoining the rectory and the church, dates from the 11th century, with a diameter of 9 metres and a height of about 19.5 metres; the newer one, from the late 13th and early 14th centuries, is about 18 metres high. The church fell out of use owing to the risk of collapse, although it has been under restoration since 2000; for more than thirty years it has hosted the Bages living nativity scene.
The Tower of Fonollosa
Monument
An 11th-century circular tower, documented since 1033 as a watchtower for the nearby castle of Fals, keeping watch over the road between Fals and Rajadell; 585 centimetres in external diameter and 14.25 metres high, it is today incorporated into a 17th-century farmhouse attached on the south side.
