What to see and do in Piera

Piera
Village
Piera is one of the most extensive municipalities in the comarca of l'Anoia, in the province of Barcelona, with 57.3 km² and an average altitude of 324.7 m; it preserves the castles of Piera, Freixe and el Castellet. It borders to the south-east with l'Alt Penedès, whose landscape it shares in the south of the term. It has 17,880 inhabitants (INE 2025), a population that grows in summer with second homes, spread between the urban centre and hamlets such as Can Bonastre. Its economy combines the metallurgical and chemical industries with dry farming, where vineyards of the Penedès designation predominate. Among its places of interest are the pine grove of Can Ferrer del Coll, les Flandes, a clay area shaped by erosion, and the modernist church of Ca N'Aguilera, the work of Francesc Berenguer.
Castle of Piera
Monument
Remains of the castell termenat of Piera, raised above the old centre of the town, in the comarca of Anoia. Documented from the year 955 on the site of an old Iberian settlement, it belonged to the monastery of Sant Cugat del Vallès and later to the viscounty of Barcelona; in 1063 it passed into the hands of Ramon Berenguer I and his successors as lords of Piera. James I the Conqueror resided repeatedly at the castle, especially between August and December 1268, and in 1265 he granted it to the Sescorts family, knights of the Order of Saint George of Alfama, who kept it until the 18th century. In 1431 Alfonso V the Magnanimous sold the barony to the monastery of Pedralbes, although the castle always remained in the hands of the crown; in 1461 Juana Enríquez, wife of John II of Aragon, took refuge there.
Castle of Freixe
Monument
Freixe Castle stood on a hill near Can Freixe, on the left bank of the river Noia, in the southern sector of the municipality of Piera, as part of the Christian resettlement that took hold in the comarca in the 10th century. The place is mentioned in 955 in a resettlement charter of the viscount of Barcelona Guitard; the circular tower, probably from the 11th century, was attached to the Romanesque church of Sant Nicolau de Freixe. In 1041 Viscountess Riquilda ceded her possessions in Freixe to her son Guislabert, bishop of Barcelona, and the castle later passed to Santa Maria de Solsona; in 1386 the infante Joan sold its jurisdiction to Berenguer de Tous. The surviving tower is about 5.4 metres in external diameter and today reaches 6.5 metres in height, built of irregular pebbles.
Castle of el Castellet
Monument
El Castellet stands on a hill 361 metres high, on the boundary of the municipalities of Piera, Vallbona d'Anoia and Cabrera d'Anoia, in the comarca of Anoia. At its summit survive the remains of the medieval fortification that gives the place its name.
Santa Maria de Piera
Monument
Church of Piera (Anoia) documented since 1002, when the list of possessions of the monastery of Sant Cugat mentions the castle of Piera with the chapel of Santa Maria; it became a parish in 1159 and its act of consecration was drawn up in 1260. In 1630, already in the 17th century, the first major restoration took place, with the construction of the chapel of the Sant Crist, the altar of the Roser and the main altar; in 1792 the door of the Sagrat Cor was opened and in 1819 the first stone of the new bell tower was laid. It is a single-nave church with lateral chapels - four on the north side and three on the south - and a barrel vault, partly semicircular and partly pointed, which reveals its Romanesque origin beneath the successive Baroque extensions; the lantern tower was added in 1883.
Piera Main Festival
Activity
The Festa Major de Piera, in the Anoia, is celebrated over a week in September with popular and cultural activities. Among its most characteristic elements are the gegants Jaume and Elisenda, which represent King James I and Elisenda de Montcada, baptised on 9 September 1995 during the Festa Major itself. They stand up to four metres tall and appear at the town's main festivities accompanied by grallers and cap-grossos.
Peaches of Piera
Curiosity
Quality peaches grown in the lands of Piera, the stars of the sweet fruit market held every summer.
Wines and cavas of southern Anoia
Food and drink
The municipalities of the southern end of the comarca, with Piera at their head, are included in the Penedès and Cava designations of origin. Their vineyards of macabeo, xarel·lo and parellada supply family wineries and large producers.
