What to see and do in la Pobla de Claramunt

La Pobla de Claramunt
Village
La Pobla de Claramunt is a municipality of l'Anoia, in the province of Barcelona, dominated by the castle of Claramunt and by the mountain dels Tres Mollons, with 2,350 inhabitants. The castle, documented since 979, belonged to Bernat Amat, adviser to Ramón Berenguer I, and later to the viscounts of Cardona; it was torn down in 1463 by the Generalitat and rebuilt in 1484 by Joan Ramon Folc, fourth count of Cardona. On top of a hill, it preserves a polygonal tower, remains of walls and the apse of its Romanesque chapel, next to the small church of Santa Margarita, from 1303. The centre was born after the floods of 1344, which destroyed the original settlement. La Pobla celebrates its main festival in July and an aplec at the castle in May; today it lives off the paper and textile industries.
Castle of Claramunt
Monument
The castle of Claramunt overlooks la Pobla de Claramunt (Anoia, Barcelona), documented since 978 in a bull of Pope Benedict VII. Within its walled precinct stands the church of Santa Maria, Romanesque, from the mid-11th century, with a basilical plan of three naves and three semicircular apses, of which two are preserved, decorated with friezes of blind arches. In 1463, during the Catalan Civil War, the complex was demolished by order of the council of Igualada because it was in the hands of the counts of Cardona, supporters of John II; it was rebuilt in 1484, although of the church only the naves of the preserved apses were remade. Worship was abandoned in 1606, and since then every first of May the Aplec of the Holy Cross is celebrated in the courtyard of the castle.
Church of Santa Maria del castell de Claramunt
Monument
The church of Santa Maria, Romanesque, is integrated into the precinct of the castle of Claramunt, in la Pobla de Claramunt (Anoia). It is a temple of rectangular plan in the form of a Latin cross, with six chapels in addition to the two beside the main altar, 37 metres long by 19 wide and 17 high, with a single nave, a high choir and a square bell tower that becomes octagonal at roof height. It preserves Gothic vault keystones from the 14th century and several images from the castle of Claramunt itself, moved here in 1463: a crucified Christ carved in polychrome wood, today in the chapel of the Sant Crist, and the Mare de Déu de la Llet, a 13th-century carving that has been the village's patron since 1925.
Sant Andreu de la Pobla de Claramunt
Monument
Sant Andreu was a 12th-century Romanesque church, now disappeared, located in the municipality of la Pobla de Claramunt, next to what is today the neighbourhood that bears its name, beyond the neighbourhood of les Figueres. It was a suffragan of Santa Maria, the church of the castle of Claramunt, and it is already documented in the 13th century, although it must have existed since the previous century; between 1463 and 1485 it held the parish burials while the castle and its church, destroyed during the Catalan civil war, were being rebuilt. In 1772 worship was banned due to the poor condition of the building, and its Baroque altarpiece was not moved to the present-day church of la Pobla until 1793; the temple ended up being demolished in the 19th century. Since the 1970s, the neighbourhood built on the hillside where it once stood has kept its name.
Els Tres Mollons
Nature
Els Tres Mollons, also called Les Planes or els Mollons, is a mountain of 548 metres in altitude located in the municipality of la Pobla de Claramunt (Anoia, Barcelona), on the boundary with other municipalities. The start of the Anoia paper industry
Historical milestone
Paper making is documented in the Anoia basin from 1584 and was concentrated in the mills of La Pobla de Claramunt and of Capellades. The deckle-edged paper that came out of these valleys was exported for centuries to the South American markets.
