Castle of Piera Monument · Piera, Anoia, Barcelona Remains of the castell termenat of Piera, raised above the old centre of the town, in the comarca of Anoia. Documented from the year 955 on the site of an old Iberian settlement, it belonged to the monastery of Sant Cugat del Vallès and later to the viscounty of Barcelona; in 1063 it passed into the hands of Ramon Berenguer I and his successors as lords of Piera. James I the Conqueror resided repeatedly at the castle, especially between August and December 1268, and in 1265 he granted it to the Sescorts family, knights of the Order of Saint George of Alfama, who kept it until the 18th century. In 1431 Alfonso V the Magnanimous sold the barony to the monastery of Pedralbes, although the castle always remained in the hands of the crown; in 1461 Juana Enríquez, wife of John II of Aragon, took refuge there.
