What to see and do in el Bruc

El Bruc
Village
El Bruc is a municipality in the comarca of l'Anoia, in the province of Barcelona, situated at the foot of Montserrat, on its western side, at 480 metres of altitude and 47 kilometres from the Catalan capital. It has 2,290 inhabitants (INE 2025), known as bruguenses, spread across five centres: Bruch, Bruch Residencial, Monserrat Parque, San Pablo de la Guardia and Las Casas de Don Massachs. It is known for the Battle of El Bruc of 1808, one of the first engagements of the Spanish War of Independence against Napoleonic troops, fought in its surroundings. Its Catalan name, Bruc, corresponds to that of heather, a shrub native to the area. Next to the A-2 motorway stands the Toro del Bruc, one of 92 Osborne bulls distributed across Spain and declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection).
Monument to the Battle of El Bruc
Monument
Public sculpture commemorating the Battle of the Bruc of 1808, in which local militiamen confronted Napoleonic troops, declared a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection). The work of sculptor Frederic Marès, carved from a single block of stone in 1952, it depicts the legendary timbaler, a young drummer born in Santpedor whose drumbeats supposedly put the French to flight by making them believe a large army was approaching. The figure, dressed as an early-19th-century peasant and armed with a trabuc, stands on a stone pedestal bearing an inscription with the name of the town and the date 1808. Although it was declared a monumento nacional (Spain's historic national-monument designation) in 1914, it was not erected until 1952, in plaster, and was replaced by the current stone sculpture in 1954.
Castle of la Guàrdia de Montserrat
Monument
Old medieval castle, also known as the castle of Bonifaci, situated on a hill in the foothills of Montserrat, in the municipal area of El Bruc, facing the cliffs of Les Agulles and next to the remains of the church of Sant Pau Vell. It was one of the five fortifications that protected the mountain, and the only one of which any trace still remains. Documented since the year 931, its jurisdiction belonged first to the viscounts of Barcelona and later to various lineages, until in 1157 the count of Barcelona recovered its rights by buying the castle together with the whole mountain of Montserrat for 300 morabatins, a horse and a mule. In 1370 King Peter the Ceremonious sold to the monastery of Montserrat the jurisdiction of the castle and the parish of El Bruc, which it retained until the 19th century.
Santa Maria del Bruc
Monument
Santa Maria del Bruc stands on a hill at the edge of El Bruc, in l'Anoia, where the church gave rise to the street and square of the parish, the oldest part of the village. The original Romanesque church was built in the 11th century, as recorded in a will of 1080 in which a certain Arnau left three ounces of gold to build the bell tower, topped by a pyramidal tower of glazed scale tiles. The church later underwent reforms in the 16th century. The Romanesque apse was walled up in 1777 and niches were added to it; when these were removed in 1958, Gothic wall paintings depicting Christ in Majesty and scenes from the life of Mary and the Three Kings appeared by accident. The 1986 restoration also brought to light Renaissance sgraffito on the vault of the main nave, with a 1644 inscription mentioning the rector Gaspar Marchs.
Sant Simeó Estilita del Bruc
Monument
Small 12th-century Romanesque hermitage dedicated to Sant Simeó Estilita, located in Sant Pau de la Guàrdia, near Ca l'Oller, in the municipal area of El Bruc (Anoia, Barcelona). It is now completely in ruins and heavily altered: it had a single nave, with two double-bevelled windows on the south wall and one on the north, and a rectangular apse at the east end, to which a building with vats for winemaking was later attached. It housed a 16th-century altarpiece dedicated to the saint, moved in 1772 to the chapel of Ca l'Oller. It is protected as a bien cultural de interés local (local-level heritage protection), with code IPAC 4074.
The battles of El Bruc against the French
Historical milestone
On 6 and 14 June 1808, Catalan somatén militias and militiamen halted in the defiles of El Bruc two Napoleonic columns that were climbing towards Manresa. Antoni Franch led the volunteers and the episode became a symbol of the resistance.
