Castle of la Guàrdia de Montserrat Monument · el Bruc, Anoia, Barcelona Old medieval castle, also known as the castle of Bonifaci, situated on a hill in the foothills of Montserrat, in the municipal area of El Bruc, facing the cliffs of Les Agulles and next to the remains of the church of Sant Pau Vell. It was one of the five fortifications that protected the mountain, and the only one of which any trace still remains. Documented since the year 931, its jurisdiction belonged first to the viscounts of Barcelona and later to various lineages, until in 1157 the count of Barcelona recovered its rights by buying the castle together with the whole mountain of Montserrat for 300 morabatins, a horse and a mule. In 1370 King Peter the Ceremonious sold to the monastery of Montserrat the jurisdiction of the castle and the parish of El Bruc, which it retained until the 19th century.
