Castle of Mediona Monument · Mediona, Alt Penedès, Barcelona The castle, built in 977 and Romanesque in style, sits above the gorge that the Bitlles river opens between the Penedès and the Noya comarca, a strategic passage between the two territories. Closely linked to the Mediona lineage —of which the deacon Guifred was a member, killed in 1032 fighting the Saracens—, it is first mentioned in 1011, in a donation to Sant Cugat del Vallès. In the 12th century the lordship passed to the Cabrera family, and in 1242 to the Cardona family, who held it until the 19th century. The oldest surviving structure is a semicircular tower with 10th-century opus spicatum-type stonework; its Gothic chapel of Santa Maria was burned in 1936 and rebuilt in 1940.
