Valcabado
Village
Valcabado is a village of 414 inhabitants in the province of Zamora, near the river Duero, born of the medieval resettlement driven by the León kings. In 1158 the infanta doña Sancha, sister of Alfonso VII, donated an estate in Valcabado to Astorga cathedral, and the place was always crown land (realengo). In the 16th century its resident Andrés Rabilero and his wife founded here a chaplaincy and an endowed memorial fund to provide dowries for penniless young women wishing to marry. Its church of la Asunción preserves from its Romanesque fabric only the ashlar bell-gable of the west front, with two round arches, and gives worship to a Gothic crucifix from the first half of the 13th century.
