Faramontanos de Tábara
Village
Faramontanos de Tábara is a village in the province of Zamora, 50 kilometres from the provincial capital and 25 from Benavente, at 714 metres above sea level, where the sierra de las Cavernas gives way to the plain crossed by the Burga stream. It forms part of the Sanabrés or Mozarabic Way of St James, with a pilgrims' hostel. Its name comes from 'foramontano', a term for the medieval resettlers who came from 'outside the mountains', south of the Cantabrian range. It has 318 inhabitants; its church of San Martín was consecrated in 1250 by the bishop of Astorga, and the village preserves a vaulted Roman fountain and underground wine cellars with pyramidal façades.
