What to see and do in Requejo

Requejo
Village
Requejo, Requeixu in Senabrian, is a hamlet of 107 inhabitants on the Camino Sanabrés or Camino Mozárabe to Santiago, with hostels and shops for pilgrims, situated in the valley that separates the Segundera range, to the north, from the Sierra de la Parada, to the south, between the 940 metres on the banks of the Requejo river and the 1843 of the Segundera. Beside the village survives the Tejedelo, a wood of yews and chestnuts more than a thousand years old declared a Site of Community Importance, saved miraculously from the fires that ravage this district. During the Middle Ages it was part of the Kingdom of León, and after Portugal's independence in 1143 it suffered the border conflicts between the two kingdoms until the situation stabilised in the early thirteenth century; in 1833 it became part of the province of Zamora.
The Tejedelo forest
Nature
This yew grove mixed with chestnut trees, whose oldest specimens are over a thousand years old, spreads across 1,350 metres above sea level on a north-facing slope of the sierra de Gamoneda, near the village of Requejo de Sanabria, in a valley between granite and slate crags carved out by Quaternary glaciers. The area, with a transitional climate between Mediterranean and Atlantic, receives more than 1,000 millimetres of rain a year. It is designated a Site of Community Importance within the Natura 2000 network, and also a special protection area for birds, being one of the best-preserved yew stands in the north-west of the peninsula.
The hermitage of the Virgen de Guadalupe
Monument
It accompanies the parish church in a village set at 1,009 metres of altitude, within a municipal district whose levels range from 940 to 1,843 metres and which is crossed by the A-52 motorway and the N-525 national road.
