What to see and do in Robleda-Cervantes

Robleda-Cervantes
Village
Robleda-Cervantes is a municipality of 375 inhabitants in the historic district of Sanabria, in the province of Zamora, made up of about ten hamlets — Barrio de la Gafa, Barrio Lagarejos, Cervantes, Ferreros, Paramio, Robleda, Sampil, San Juan de la Cuesta, Triufé and Valdespino — besides the depopulated hamlet of Chaguaceda, which existed until the early nineteenth century. Its territory, fairly flat except for the San Juan peak (1416 metres), looks onto the Cernadilla reservoir, which forms the boundary with Puebla de Sanabria; the village of Robleda stands at 1011 metres. Groves of Pyrenean oak (Quercus pyrenaica) predominate, mixed with chestnuts and riverside trees, along with pine woods and heather scrub. The Mesta's cordel drove-road, which linked Puebla de Sanabria with Puente de Sanabria, passes through its territory.
The San Juan peak
Nature
At 1,416 metres it is the greatest height in the municipality, which descends to 900 metres at the tail of the Cernadilla reservoir; the temperate Mediterranean climate leaves here an annual average of 11.5 degrees and 781 millimetres of rain.
The hermitage of San Pelayo
Monument
Together with the sites of the Alto de Santo Toribio, in Ferreros, and of the sierra of San Juan de la Cuesta, this hermitage makes up the heritage of a municipality spread over eight villages and with 375 registered inhabitants.
The name born from the 1916 reform
Historical milestone
The compound place name owes nothing to the author of Don Quixote: it was born in 1916, when the national reform of municipal nomenclature joined the names of Robleda and Cervantes, two of the hamlets of the same municipal district.
