What to see and do in Trefacio

Trefacio
Village
Trefacio is a municipality of 163 inhabitants located in the heart of the Lago de Sanabria natural park (Zamora), seven kilometres from the largest lake of glacial origin on the Iberian Peninsula. It is famous for the trout of its river, so highly regarded that they gave rise to the Centro de Interpretación de la Trucha. It already existed in the Middle Ages as one of the towns of the Sanabria valley under the orbit of Puebla de Sanabria, and its church belonged in the twelfth century to Godina Vermúdez, who ceded it in 1162 to the monastery of San Martín de Castañeda. Every 25 December it celebrates the festival of the Talanqueiras, of great ethnographic standing and related to the Carochos and the Vaca Bayona of other villages in Zamora; its church of San Mamés stands over the town hall square.

Monument
It presides over the village square and stands out for its façade, for a singular doorway and for the bell tower; on the outskirts, a small hermitage today houses the cemetery of this municipality within the natural park.
