What to see and do in Hermisende

Hermisende
Village
Hermisende is a bilingual municipality of 207 inhabitants in Alta Sanabria, in the north-west of Zamora, next to Ourense and the border with Portugal; besides the main settlement it comprises those of Castrelos, Castromil, San Ciprián and La Tejera, and its residents habitually use both Spanish and Galician-Portuguese. At the site of Pedra as Ferraduras there are cup marks and carvings on the granite outcrops, many of anthropic origin; a hillfort from the late antique period confirms that the place was occupied with the arrival of the Visigoths. After the birth of the Kingdom of León in the year 910 it was incorporated into it, and control over it was disputed between the kingdoms of León and Portugal; since the War of Restoration it has belonged to Spain, being incorporated into the province of Zamora in 1833.
The baroque church of Hermisende
Monument
The church that presides over the municipal capital raises a tall tower of Galician Baroque, proof of the influence arriving from the other side of the border; beside it stands a casa do cura of notable dimensions.
El Castelo de los Moros
Monument
Between Castromil and La Tejera this fortified settlement of the Celtic period is preserved; in the spot of Pedra as Ferraduras and in the granite outcrops of the surroundings petroglyphs and rock carvings have been located.
The border speech of Hermisende
Curiosity
The border position with Galicia and Portugal has left Galician-Portuguese and Leonese features in the local speech; Castromil, moreover, is split into two neighbourhoods, one in the province of Orense and the other in Sanabria.
The magosto (chestnut roast) of All Saints
Food and drink
At All Saints the magosto is celebrated, the roast chestnut festival that the Alta Sanabria shares with Galicia and northern Portugal, in hills where the chestnut is still a tree of economic use.
