What to see and do in Cobreros

Cobreros
Village
Cobreros is a municipality of 543 inhabitants spread across thirteen villages in the Zamoran comarca of Sanabria, within the Lake Sanabria Natural Park, the largest lake of glacial origin on the Iberian Peninsula. Its municipal area runs from the valley of the Tera river, in the east, to the heights of the Sierra Segundera, which closes it off to the west and rises above 1,700 metres; among its heights the Sotillo lagoon is born, also of glacial origin. In San Román de Sanabria grows a centuries-old chestnut tree about five metres in diameter, and from the villages of the municipality routes of varying difficulty set off towards the Sotillo waterfall or the Peña Cueva shepherds' shelter. Cobreros also preserves petroglyphs known as the Footprints of Santiago's Horse, which some authors attribute to a Celtic origin.
The parish church of Cobreros
Monument
Rebuilt in 1649 under the priest Pedro Blanco over parts dated to 1574, it was completed with a sacristy finished in 1688; the old documentation also cites the hermitages of San Roque and of the Bendito Cristo.
The glacial lagoon of Sotillo
Nature
Of glacial origin and about a hundred metres wide, it opens in the sierra above the village of Sotillo de Sanabria, near the waterfall of the same name, in a municipal district that ranges from 900 to 1,792 metres.
The braña of La Matanza
Nature
This high pasture gathers each year, between May and September, hundreds of head of cattle from the villages of the municipality, in a short transhumance that still structures the livestock life of the municipal district.
The purchase of the sierra from the countess
Historical milestone
In 1920 the residents bought from the countess of Benavente the sierra they had been using by custom, closing centuries of seigneurial dependence; in 1972 the municipality also absorbed the municipal district of Terroso.
Octopus Sanabria style
Food and drink
A potato stew with octopus seasoned with garlic, sweet paprika and a touch of wine, very close to the Galician formula, which is never missing from the festivals of the thirteen villages that make up this mountain municipality.
