What to see and do in Pedralba de la Pradería

Pedralba de la Pradería
Village
Pedralba de la Pradería is a municipality of 198 inhabitants in the Sanabria district, in the north-west of the province of Zamora, which brings together the villages of Calabor, Lobeznos, Rihonor de Castilla and Santa Cruz de Abranes, besides Pedralba itself. It is one of the municipalities of Zamora where three Romance languages coexist: Spanish, Leonese and Galician, the latter with Portuguese influences in Calabor and in Rihonor de Castilla, a settlement split by the border with Portugal. Repopulated in the Middle Ages within the Kingdom of León, it lived through the border conflicts with Portugal until the thirteenth century and afterwards belonged to the Lands of the Count of Benavente. Around 1850 it took on its present territorial extent, and until 1916 it was known simply as Pedralba.
Rihonor de Castilla, the village split by the border
Curiosity
The main street separates Rihonor de Castilla from Portuguese Rio de Onor: a single village divided by the border whose residents speak Castilian and Portuguese interchangeably and call themselves the upper one and the lower one.
The three languages of the municipality
Curiosity
In its five villages three Romance languages coexist: official Castilian, Leonese varieties and, in Calabor, a Galician variant with Leonese and Portuguese influences, the result of centuries of life on the border.
The 1916 name change
Historical milestone
The reform that in 1916 changed the name of 573 Spanish town councils added to Pedralba the surname de la Pradería to distinguish it from its namesakes; the municipality today keeps 198 households in 105 square kilometres.
