What to see and do in San Vicente de la Cabeza

San Vicente de la Cabeza
Village
San Vicente de la Cabeza is a Zamora municipality of 309 inhabitants that brings together, besides the eponymous hamlet, those of Bercianos de Aliste, Campogrande de Aliste and Palazuelo de las Cuevas, in the comarca of Aliste, near the border with Portugal, within the Meseta Ibérica biosphere reserve. The so-called Camino de los Moros follows the old Roman road between Curunda, today Rabanales, and the hillfort of Palazuelo, in Zoela territory, a Romanised Astur people from which comes the stele in the church's apse. On the banks of the Aliste there are flour mills and pre-Roman caves from which variscite was extracted for necklaces. Its Romanesque church of San Vicente Mártir holds a Plateresque altarpiece, and on 11 August the Atenazador goes out, a mask festival in Aliste's most typical style.
The Holy Burial of Bercianos de Aliste
Activity
On Good Friday in Bercianos de Aliste, the main settlement of the municipality of San Vicente de la Cabeza (Aliste, Zamora), members of the brotherhood process dressed in the linen shroud that will serve as their burial cloth when they die. The events are organised by the Brotherhood of the Holy Christ of the Cross, also known as the Brotherhood of the Holy Burial, which has existed since the 16th century. The day includes the liturgical rite of the unnailing of an articulated Christ figure, followed by a procession of the Holy Burial during which religious chants such as Las cinco llagas and the Miserere are sung. Since the late 20th century the ceremony has been declared of Regional Tourist Interest in Castile and León.
The Brotherhood of the Santo Cristo de la Cruz
Historical milestone
The earliest known ordinances of the brotherhood of Bercianos bear the date of 7 January 1536; a bull of Pope Paul III and another of Paul V, in 1618, confirmed the privileges of its brothers.
The articulated Christ of Bercianos
Monument
The carving, life-size and with all its joints movable, is kept all year in a glass case in the sacristy of the church and only comes out on Good Friday to be nailed to the cross and then taken down.
The church of San Vicente Mártir
Monument
A church of simple Romanesque with a low, wide bell gable, it keeps three altarpieces — Plateresque, Baroque and Neoclassical — and a relic of the saint's head to which protection against rabies and smallpox was attributed.
The Atenazador
Curiosity
This masked character comes out on 11 August in the local masquerade; in the past the celebration fell on 29 June, at San Pedro, and was joined to the communal cleaning of the fountain in which the whole neighbourhood took part.
