Alcazarén
Village
Alcazarén is a town in the Tierra de Pinares district, in the province of Valladolid, at 741 metres above sea level between the rivers Eresma and Cega. Its name comes from the Arabic al-qasrayn, “the two fortresses”. It is the last stage of the Camino de Santiago from Madrid that sets out from Coca. It preserves two of the most interesting Romanesque-Mudéjar remains in southern Valladolid, datable to an advanced 13th century: the church of Santiago Apóstol, declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) and today the only one still open for worship, and that of San Pedro, restored after years in ruins and now used for cultural activities, of which there is a model in Olmedo's Mudéjar theme park. Its economy is agricultural, with vineyards under the D.O. Rueda designation. It has 623 inhabitants.
