Pedrajas de San Esteban
Village
Pedrajas de San Esteban is a municipality in the Tierra de Pinares district, in the south-eastern tip of the province of Valladolid, bordering Segovia, between the limestone páramos to the north and the Scots-pine and maritime-pine forests to the south. With about 3,400 inhabitants, it is the pine-nut village par excellence of Castile; it also lives from the manufacture of wooden doors and makes use of the resin from its pines and the gypsum of its páramos. The municipality grew up around its church of San Esteban Protomártir, built on a small mound; in 1732, by royal decree of Philip V, it became a town independent of the jurisdiction of Íscar. Its baroque church holds five altarpieces with Solomonic columns, and the hermitage of Sacedón looks out over the Eresma among Scots pines.
