What to see and do in Matapozuelos

Matapozuelos
Village
Matapozuelos is a village in the comarca of Tierra del Vino, in the province of Valladolid, on the plain fertilised by the rivers Adaja and Eresma, with a railway station on the Madrid-Irún line. It has 977 inhabitants who live off cereals, wheat, chickpeas and livestock farming. Its origins go back to the old settlement of Sieteiglesias, with prehistoric sites and a settlement of hermits devoted to san Miguel; the first known mention appears in the Chronicle of Ximénez de Rada, describing the battle of Las Navas de Tolosa. It is the birthplace of Miguel Íscar, mayor of Valladolid between 1877 and 1880. Its church of Santa María Magdalena, Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection), bears a three-tier Mudéjar tower topped by a lantern, spire, ball and weathervane.
The Mudejar tower of Santa María Magdalena
Monument
The church of Santa María Magdalena dominates the town centre of Matapozuelos, in the Tierra de Pinares of Valladolid, with its prominent tower, popularly known as La Giralda de Castilla: three brick sections, the work of Morisco master builders, topped by a lantern, spire, iron ball and weathervane; the temple was begun in the mid-16th century and the tower completed in the early 18th. It is an outstanding example of 16th-century architecture that has undergone numerous alterations throughout its history, partly modifying its original structure. It preserves inside one of the most notable examples of late Gothic in the province, in the vault of the presbytery, together with great sculptural and pictorial richness in its altarpieces, for which it was declared a bien de interés cultural (heritage site) in 1998.
The chickpeas and spirits of Matapozuelos
Food and drink
The traditional agriculture of the municipal district combined cereal, wheat and chickpeas with a dominant vineyard; from that base were born the flour and aguardiente factories that industrialised the village in the 19th century.
