What to see and do in Salvador de Zapardiel

Salvador de Zapardiel
Village
Salvador de Zapardiel is a municipality in the province of Valladolid, whose territory includes, besides the main town, the hamlets of Honcalada and the settlement of San Llorente. It is crossed by the river Zapardiel and the río Viejo, an abandoned meander of the former, in a landscape of strong contrast between winter mists and summer drought. It already existed in the 13th century, when it was called Echasalvador and formed part of the archdeaconry of Arévalo, diocese of Ávila; in 1789 it was still part of the Comunidad de Villa y Tierra de Arévalo, and with the new provincial division of the 19th century it passed from Ávila to Valladolid, into the judicial district of Olmedo. In its square, its 16th-century Mudéjar church shares space with a thousand-year-old elm and an 18th-century cross. It has 99 inhabitants.
Church of la Invención de la Santa Cruz
Monument
A sixteenth-century Mudéjar church whose tower lines up round brick arches. It keeps altarpieces of the period and is completed by an eighteenth-century square cross and another solitary cross at the edge of the road.
The channelled Zapardiel and the río Viejo
Nature
After the flood of 1860 the channel was canalised from 1867 and the old meander was left as the río Viejo. The whole, with the Morteros stream, is protected as a ZEPA and ZEC and preserves groves of white poplar.
The thousand-year-old elm of the square
Curiosity
Beside the church of the Invención de la Santa Cruz an elm still stands to which a thousand years are attributed, a survivor of the Dutch elm disease that devastated the Castilian elm groves in the last third of the twentieth century.
The flood of the Zapardiel
Historical milestone
The river burst its banks for four days and swept away houses and harvests. The catastrophe forced the canalisation of the channel from 1867, leaving the old course turned into the so-called río Viejo.
